Resilience as a protective factor to mitigate the parasuicide in adolescents of Ibagué, Colombia

The growing scenario of suicidal behaviors in school adolescents in the city of Ibagué - Colombia, has generated the need to look for alternatives that can stop this phenomenon from social prevention and in the family nucleus. The main objective of this study is to analyze resilience as a protective factor to mitigate parasuicide in students belonging to two public educational institutions in the city of Ibagué, in Colombia. To this end, an exploratory-descriptive research with a qualitative approach was carried out, which had a sample of 21 adolescents, of both sexes, aged between 11 and 17 years, previously identified with self-injurious behavior. The following instruments were applied for the research: semi-structured interview, Wagnild and Young (ER) resilience scale and the instrument for Identification of Suicidal Risk in Adolescents - IRSA, so that broad spectrum risk factors could be addressed, such as they are the death of a father, poverty, family conflict, chronic exposure to violence, parental problems, drug abuse, criminal behavior or deficit in mental health. Finally, the results of this study show that the group under study shows different forms of self-harms as an expression of their individuality, and that their aspects of their home, their ideals and the life project, are aspects that can function as factors protection and enhance their resilience capacity.
